Fintech Snacks ๐ฟ | July 9 2023
My job is to make sure your reading list on African fintech is lit ๐ฅ
Hey peeps,
A warm welcome to all new and old subscribers to Fintech Snacks ๐ฟ,
Each week, Iโll round up three of my favourite fintech articles, reports, podcasts, webinars etc., that explore a trending topic in Africaโs fintech scene. No deep analysis here; just serving you a list of recommended reads thatโll help you sort through the noise.
Hereโs what I got up to this week ๐๐พ:
#1:ย ๐ต African tech funding in May by Africa: The Big Deal
I love the mini-posts Max and his team put together monthly, summarizing key funding trends across Africaโs tech ecosystem. Kudos to them ๐ป
African startups attracted $645m in May, which was 50% higher than the same period last year (May 2022). A bit of relief from March when we recorded a jaw-dropping MOM slump from $700m in February to $70m in March (yikes!)
All exciting news, but certainly not the crystal ball we need to tell us whether weโre out of the funding winter for good.
#2:ย ๐ McKinseyโs Reimagining economic growth in Africa Report
First off, McKinsey be looking real clutch. This report was way more compact and visually appealing than the typical wordy McKinsey report.
By 2050, the Motherland will be home to the largest and youngest population globally.
Africaโs problem has never been birthing babies. Our problem has been training them and making them employable ๐ฌ. Ed-tech to the rescue?
#3:ย ๐ณ๐ฌ Fintech Food - The Future of Money
Yโall know I donโt play with my Fintech Food subscription, lol.
Simon doesnโt do snacks; he dishes three-course meals. His posts are super lengthy, but the analysis is well-thought-out, and he always goes deep on the subject matter.
In this post, he explores what the future of money may look like. An obvious question but one that busy fintech operators often donโt have the time to ponder.
Mindblowing discoveries:
You need to stop whatever it is youโre doing and order a Chocolate Chunk Banana bread from Gourmet Twist. I gave into the hype and tried it out for the first time last week, and my life has never been the same. Enough said.
Catch ya next week!
