My job is to make sure your reading list on African fintech is lit 🔥
Hey guys,
Welcome to Fintech Snacks 🍿,
Each week, I’ll round up three of my favourite articles, reports, podcasts, webinars etc for the week. No deep dives here, just a list of recommended reads. I’ll be kind to your inbox and keep the content short and to the point.
Here’s what I found interesting this week 👇🏾
#1: 💳 Afrobility’s podcast analyzing Yoco, a South African payment company
Okay, I need to give you a heads-up. It’s a 2-hour podcast.
But if you’re looking to get a glimpse of South Africa’s B2B payments market, then it’s totally worth it. The co-hosts do a decent job of dissecting SA’s online/offline payments landscape, Yoco’s competitors, growth ambitions, business model risks, pricing strategy etc
The co-hosts are also pretty hilarious, so you don’t feel the hours.
If South Africa is a market of interest to you, then this will be worth that idle hour. If not, don’t bother.
#2: ❌ CNBC’s Why Goldman Sachs Marcus project failed
I’m sure you’re struggling to see the connection between a large US investment bank (Goldman Sachs) and African fintech.
I’ll explain. One of Africa’s largest tech media companies (Multichoice) recently announced it wants to chill with the big boys and dip its toes in the B2B payments pool.
That got me thinking about Goldman. Goldman’s failed experiment with launching its retail product (Marcus) shows how hard it is for large behemoths to spin off new offerings that break from their core. I’m not saying Multichoice doesn’t stand a chance, but it won’t be a walk in the park.
#3: 📚 Fintech Take’s recommended reading lists
Alex put together a pretty diverse list of 27 recommended book titles, covering themes from Corporate History, Human Behaviour, the World, Algorithms, Graphic Design to Money.
Given how much content I consume, it’s been a disturbingly long time since I picked up a book. Alright, 100% honesty? It’s probably been six months. Call it the curse of adulting.
But who knows maybe one of these titles may catch your fancy, and get thrown into your “should-read this but never get around to it” list.
That’s all folks 😀
Catch you next week,
Nchy 😊
